Objective
Students will analyze the cover of the book, and what can be gleaned by it.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of Freshwater provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the novel depicts a two-headed snake illustrated in the style of Japanese watercolor paintings. Almost immediately upon beginning to read the novel, the reader is confronted by the narrator’s claim of having reptilian parentage. In addition, Emezi is half-Malaysian, so the Asian style of the cover’s artwork provides another topic of discussion.
