Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Perrin's depictions of Violette's family background and attitudes towards motherhood. In Part I, Perrin introduces the reader to Violette, who was given up for adoption after the doctors initially thought she was a stillborn baby. She has always felt abandoned and somewhat alone, and when she meets Philippe Toussaint at age 17 in her bartending job, she is swept off her feet by his handsomeness and charisma. When Violette finds out she is pregnant, she is nervous but very happy.
