· The story is narrated by one first-person narrator and several third-person narrators: Homer in the first-person and Sanzi, Stokes, Anna, Nora, Billy, Ferdinand, Juna, and Suleman from third-person points of view.
· In the “Prologue,” Sanzi is breaking rules by being out at night in a forbidden area.
· From a tree she sees swamp, mud, muck, and tangle before her until a fog rolls in and obscures her view.
· She strains to see the plantation lands.
· She is a free child of the swamp, and those lands are a mystery to her.
· It is a miracle that her parents and others have run from the plantations and made a home on elevated swampland on their own “secret island in an ocean of mud” (vii).
