Lesson 1 (from Good Neighbors)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the setting of the first section of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from “Good Neighbors” in order to understand the protagonists’ neighborhood and the values of its residents.
The first section of Freedom takes place on Barrier Street in the neighborhood of Ramsey Hill, and Walter and Patty Berglund are among the street’s earliest residents. With his presentation of this neighborhood, Franzen presents a variety of worldviews and values.

Class Discussion: What did you think of Barrier Street and its residents? What is Ramsey Hill like? What sorts of problems concern the residents? What are their values? Are they generally likable people? Why or why not?
