Lesson 1 (from Part I (Before We Begin - Chapter 8))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Frank's relationship with his father, Mr. Li. Frank's father is a hard-working Korean-born man who spends long hours at his shop, known to Frank's family as "The Store." Mr. Li speaks broken English and Frank finds it difficult to connect on a meaningful level with his father. Nonetheless, Frank loves his father and knows his father wants the best for him - even if Mr. Li sometimes seems insular, old-fashioned, and even a bit racist.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who is Frank's father, Frank Li Senior? What does Mr. Li do for a living? What are Frank's impressions of what is important to his father? What are Frank's biggest complaints or problems with his father?
