· Chapters alternate between past and present tense depending on the narrator and their viewpoint.
· In Chapter 1, “The Roads,” the narrator Nanapush uses a third-person narration to describe how Fleur traveled through the woods on various trails until she reached the railroad tracks.
· She followed the tracks until the traffic was too heavy, and then she waked beside the tracks.
· When she wore her makizinan to shreds, she stole a pair of boots from a farmhouse.
· She killed a fat old dog to be able to take the boots.
· She scavenged for food along the way.
· The night before she reached the city, she found a tree and buried the bones of the dog and the clan markers.
· She tied a red prayer flag to the highest branches...
