He is referring to the generation of men who were involved in the shaping of the American republic in the 1780's and 1790's, and comparing this generation somewhat to the best selling novel called THE GREATEST GENERATION which referred to the men and women who fought WWII. The author believes the generation of the 1780s and 1790s to be the greatest generation of political talent in American history.
2. Why would John Adams think that his correspondence would be of interest to future generations?
John Adams realized that his decisions, suggestions, and participation in the Constitutional Convention, the events before and after it, and the formation of the country would be historical, and that in the future, historians would want to know what factors were involved in making the new laws and standards of the nation.
