Lesson 1 (from Part 1, Prelude - Chapter 7)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Laurie Halse Anderson’s historical novel, Forge. Students will research the author and the setting of the novel, identify and discuss its genre and narrative perspective, and read the Prelude. Forge is set during the American Revolutionary War, between January of 1777 and May of 1778. The Prelude introduces protagonist Curzon Smith, who narrates the story.

Research/Independent Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Laurie Halse Anderson, the publication of Forge, and the settings of New York state and Pennsylvania in 1777 and 1778. Where were the battlefronts of the war in 1777?
