· After an epigraph from Fernando Pessoa, Chapter 1 begins with Leonard Fife—referenced by his surname—querying his caretaker, Renée Jacques, about his agreement to sit for an interview; both are described as Renée pushes Fife past his wife, Emma Flynn’s, office.
· Fife repeats the query, and Renée answers that he agreed as part of his professional obligations as a filmmaker: “Monsieur Fife agreed to make the interview because he’s famous for something to do with cinema, and famous people are required to make interviews” (2).
· Fife asserts that he needs Emma with him, and Renée presses on, described in further detail along the way.
· Fife reasserts his need to have Emma present, Renée responds, and Fife chides her.
