This is the trick Valeria uses to give herself time for her diary and is a symbol of her new secrecy. She lies to her family that it is a present from a colleague when really she has bought it using shopping money, doubling her guilt.

Black Notebook

This is the object Valeria buys at the beginning of the novel and is a symbol of her private self. It becomes an outlet for thoughts she cannot express elsewhere and forces her to profoundly reexamine herself and her relationships. The person which she finds within it becomes increasingly distant from the one known to those around her.
