Objective
Students will analyze the novel’s main character as readers first encounter her, preparing them to observe her development through the course of the book. Valeria Cossati is 43, a mother of two, and married happily so she believes at the outset. She is hardworking to the point of self-sacrifice, and becomes immediately more reflective through the process of keeping a diary.

Class Discussion: What are your first impressions of Valeria, the diary writer? What adjectives would you use to describe her? What information are readers given about her? What picture of her do you have in her head? How do you expect her to change during the novel? Why do you think she wants the notebook in the first place? Why does she conceal it from her family?
