Prologue-Chapter 6

· The people of Chinatown in San Francisco are celebrating.

· Mei remembers that no one hated the Chairman at first.

· “In the beginning, he was the beginning” (3).

· Mei listens to the radio talking about the Chairman and his accomplishments and failures.

· She turns off the radio and dons her restaurant uniform.

· She works at the Jade Dragon, the oldest banquet hall in her neighborhood.

· In Chinatown, many people are hiding behind lies of a false identity, lies about their age, or false stories about their lives.

· Their “imaginations give [them] what life never could” (4).

· Mei wonders how people might treat her if they knew the truth about her.

· For more than ten years she has kept secrets...
