Freedom out west
Give the students a blank map of the United States. Each student is to draw a timeline on the map that starts from right to left. The east coast represents the early 1600s and moves into the dawn of the 19th century as it moves westward toward Kansas. Include events that relate to black history in America. Events from the play should also be included.
Five freedoms
Bring a large poster to the classroom. Have each student trace their hand on the poster. Within each finger outline, the students are to write something they are happy they are free to do.
Show and tell
Have the students bring in an object that they can never leave the house without. Encourage creativity beyond a wallet and Chapstick. If they cannot find something, have them choose something that they feel best symbolizes him/herself.
