Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the genre of the novel. Flush is a novel that takes place in present-day Florida. The story is realistic and the events could happen, making the story realistic fiction.

Class Discussion: Where does the novel take place? Is this a true story that actually happened? Would the book be considered fiction or non-fiction? Is it easy to tell when the story is happening? Does the story take place during a notable or general period of time? Are there several time periods when the story might be happening or is the story written so that it could take place in almost any modern time period? What details are provided about the setting? Do these seem to be true-to-life? Has there been adventure already in the novel? What has happened that can be considered an exciting or unusual experience...
