Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss Red and how Jackson uses accumulation to reveal and develop Red's character. Accumulation is a literary device. It allows authors to gather scattered ideas in a literary work and gradually build on information that readers need to know.

Class Discussion: How is Red introduced? What is she thinking at the beginning of Chapter 1? What do her thoughts in that chapter and the other chapters reveal about her? How does Jackson show Red's character traits through her thoughts and interactions with other characters? What do readers learn about her in Chapters 1 to 9? How does Jackson use accumulation to reveal and develop Red's character?
