Chapter 1
• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Lippincott, Rachael. Five Feet Apart. Simon & Schuster, 2018.
• Each chapter follows the viewpoint of either Stella or Will; the first chapter follows Stella Grant’s perspective.
• As the novel begins, Stella is decorating her hospital room; she studies the drawing her sister Abby made of a pair of “lungs molded from a sea of flowers” (1) that hangs in her room.
• Stella wonders what having healthy lungs would be like; she inhales and feels her lungs struggle to function.
• Stella then studies a photo of her and Abby taken last year, when the two visited the park in the winter; the photo makes Stella remember a feeling of adventure.
• Stella continues to hang photos and artwork around her bed and ponders the items on her to-do list.
