Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 10))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Boulley's descriptions of the turmoil and tensions Daunis experiences between the two sides of her family. Daunis's mother, Grace Fontaine, comes from a wealthy, "old-money" white family of French heritage that has historically held power and influence in her hometown of Sault Ste. Marie. Daunis's father's family are Native Americans, the Firekeepers. The Fontaines, especially Daunis's maternal grandmother, "GrandMary," never approved of Daunis's father Levi. GrandMary has often said derogatory things about Natives, hurting Daunis, and Daunis also knows that her Firekeeper relatives - including her beloved Aunt Teddie, her father Levi's sister - view Daunis as separate from them due to her white skin and economic and social privileges.
