Twelve years before the Doom of Valyria (114 BC), Aenar Targaryen sold his holdings in the Freehold and the Lands of the Long Summer. He ate only bread and water and spent his waking hours in prayer. On the seventh day, the Crone showed him the path ahead. The city would burn if Oldtown took up arms against Aegon the Dragon. The Hightower, Citadel, and the Starry Sept would be destroyed. So when Aegon Targaryen and his host approached Oldtown, they found the city gates open and Lord Hightower waiting to submit to Aegon's rule.
