· In Chapter 1, a child disappears on a foggy day.
· When the fog comes in, Elias van Rooyen quits working because the wood is damp and will not yield to the ax.
· He tells his wife he is done working and asks her to bring coffee.
· She asks him if their son, Lukas, is with him.
· Elias tells her no.
· Elias is the only one of the four families who have houses on Barnard’s Island who is not a woodcutter.
· He makes beams and earns real money, unlike the woodcutters who have to barter with the wood buyers.
· Barta sends their oldest son Willem, to tell Elias that Lukas is not in the house.
· Within half an hour everyone is searching for Lukas.
