Lesson 1 (from Chapter One - Chapter Five)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of Felix Ever After in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the novel might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Felix Love, his dad, and his best friend, Ezra. The reader is introduced to the main settings, all of which are in New York City: the apartment Felix shares with his dad, Ezra’s apartment, and St. Catherine’s, the school that Felix and Ezra attend. The reader is also introduced to themes involving identity, abandonment, and marginalization. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Felix’s conflicts with his dad, Declan, and even himself.
