Objective

Objective: This first chapter of the novel is rich with imagery and descriptive language. The objective of this lesson is to examine how the imagery used in this chapter helps paint a picture of the scene.

1) Review the literary device imagery with class (if necessary).
2) Divide students into small groups. Have them go on a "scavenger hunt" in the first chapter for vivid imagery. Ask them to draw a picture of each image presented and to label it with the quote used in the novel. Have groups share their findings.
3) Class discussion: Which image is most powerful? Why? How do these images help you visualize the plot, setting and characters in this chapter? What senses do you use to "experience" these images? How do these images help you understand the characters better? What have you learned about Sebastien and Amabelle through these images?
