Author Study
Have students research Edwidge Danticat's life, read interviews with her and/or read other pieces of literature by her. Ask them to re-examine the novel in light of what they learn about the author.
Historical Research
The Farming of Bones is an excellent jumping off point for a research project on the intertwining histories of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Have students research the histories of these two countries (focusing primarily on the 1930s and '40s). Ask them to create multimedia presentations to share their information with the class.
Character Dinner Party
Divide the class into small groups of 4-6 students each. Have each group pick 2-3 characters from Haiti and 2-3 characters from the Dominican Republic.
