Mr. Fox

This is the titular character and protagonist at the center of the novel. This character has a wife and four children. He is cunning, but sometimes his willingness to take risks gets him into trouble. This character is at the center of a conflict with the humans in the novel due to his habit of stealing food to feed his family from the humans' coffers. This character lives with his family beneath a large tree on a hill above the valley of farmland.

Boggis

This character is a farmer who raises chickens. This character is described as being enormously fat. He is the only one of the farmers who does not own a caterpillar tractor.
