The old man wakes up from what he initially thinks is a dream until he realizes that the neigbor's horse has not whinnied. The horse has whinnied at the same time for as long as he can remember and its absence has disturbed him from his sleep.

When they enter their neighbor's house they see Maria Lovgren tied to a chair with a noose around her neck, conscious, but barely breathing. Her husband lying dead on the floor. The old man can only see Johannes's foot because a curtain hides the rest of his body.
