Lesson 1 (from Prologue and Fall: Chapters 1-5)
Objective
Students will learn about the different types of irony used in literature and will investigate Holmes’s various methods of using irony within the text of Evvie Drake Starts Over.
Irony is used by Holmes to great effect and is often used to increase the dramatic or even comedic effects of certain scenes or particular situations in the novel. Holmes’s use of irony becomes apparent quickly within the prologue, entitled First. In the prologue, Evvie packs her car with the intention of finally leaving her husband Tim. As she is heading back into the house to grab a few more of her belongings, she receives a phone call telling her that Tim has been in a horrific car accident.
