Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapter 2)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. Students will read the Prologue, research the central setting of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and discuss the author’s narrative style in the book. Evicted is an exploration of the impacts of the 2008 financial crisis and the issues of poverty, affordable housing, and economic exploitation in the U.S. In his Prologue, author Desmond introduces one of the families he will follow through 2008 and 2009 as they each seek financial stability and housing.
Lesson
Group Assignment: Assign students to form groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue to Evicted. As a group, discuss the information that has been related and the style in which it has been conveyed to the reader. Retain notes of this discussion for the class discussion following.
