Objective: In the story "Everything That Rises Must Converge," Julian and his mother represent the two sides of the issue of racial integration seen in the U.S. South. The objective of this lesson is to identify and explore the ways that these two characters are developed as representations of these social views.

1) Provide an introduction to the historical period in which this story is set, focusing on laws desegregating public facilities (including buses) and reactions to integration (especially in the U.S. South). This can be done through a short video, lecture or reading a series of articles with students.
2) Divide students into two groups. Assign each group a character: Julian and Julian's mother. Ask each group to examine the story to identify the character's views on racial integration.
