A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Bring in the oldest photograph you can find from your family, or one that you are allowed to bring. Looking at people in the picture, create a back story for the people in the picture. What are their lives like? What kind of world do they live in? What are their struggles? Their joys?

A picture is the impetus for the novel Everything is Illuminated. The questions Jonathan has about the woman and her relationship with his grandfather is what drives him to travel abroad. Bring in photos that include people other than you. Swap photos with someone in the class. Make up a story for the people in the photographs. What are their names? Why are they taking the photo? Are they friends? Family?
