Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 40))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Cowney's memories of both his mother and his father. Cowney's parents both died when he was very young - his father while serving in WWI and his mother shortly after childbirth. Cowney's memories as he explains them in Part I about his father are mostly about his father's funeral, though he is not even sure they are really his memories. Cowney's knowledge of both of his parents comes almost entirely from Lishie, his paternal grandmother, and from townspeople in Cherokee who knew his parents. Bud, Cowney's uncle and his father's brother, is a bullying and stressful presence in Cowney's life.
