These stories all center around a pursuit of happiness. The objective of this lesson will be to discuss what these people were looking for to make them happy, and how this pursuit affected their lives.

Lesson

1) Read aloud with the class the part of "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" where his unhappy marriage is described at the beginning of the story. Now read with the class the part that describes the joy and confidence he feels after shooting the buffalo. Have the students write a compare/contrast essay about these two statements. What changes? What remains the same? Make sure they cite examples from the text to support their work. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

2) Read aloud with the class "The Capital of the World". Discuss...
