• This novel is written in the first-person, primarily in the past-tense, from the point of view of Sophie Biyoya-Ciardulli, a 14-year-old girl whose father lives in the U.S. and whose mother lives in the DRC.
• Part I is titled Otto. In Chapter 1, Sophie was in Kinshasa, the DRC capital.
• Sophie was in a car with Clement, an employee of her mother's. Sophie's mother runs a sanctuary for bonobos outside of the city.
• In the city, in the car that Clement was driving, Sophie saw a man walking along showing off a baby bonobo. The bonobo grinned periodically but looked in ill health.
• Against Clement's strenuous objections, Sophie got out of the car and approached the man with the bonobo.
