Terrarium

In the novel after Ellen's pony ride on Dolphin, she arrives home to find the other foster children making a terrarium. A terrarium is a covered planter usually made of glass that is used to grow and display plants. Have the class work in groups to make terrariums.

Biscuit Making

In the novel, Ellen prepares biscuits to feed to Dolphin, the pony, on her outing with him. Have the class practice math and cooking skills by preparing biscuits to enjoy during one of the lessons. Or, bring in prepared biscuits for the class to enjoy.

Charity Event

Have the class raise money to buy disadvantaged children Christmas presents/coats/school supplies.
