Essay Topic 1

The tales in the Elder Edda are often repetitive. Some are retold in another point of view while others are almost identical to other poems. Explain the use of the repetition and why it was so common. Why do you think that the names and/or spellings sometimes changed from one account to the next?

Essay Topic 2

In many of the Eddas, people are turned into or are approached by talking animals. In some cases, people learn to communicate with certain animals by drinking blood or performing other rites. Choose one of the following: Write about the metaphors involved in using birds, such as eagles and ravens, in the Eddas OR how a person or god could be turned into an animal as a punishment, curse or lesson to be learned.

Odin was well known for donning disguises whenever he was attempting to trick or test someone or otherwise hide his identity. Examine Odin's use of disguises. Explain why a disguise would be necessary for the father of all the gods. How successful was Odin with his deceptions?
