Possible Activities:
• Using "Why I Like Country Music," have the students identify how the author of this novel has been successful at portraying radically different worldviews.
• Discuss why you think Gloria would be so anti Southern, including country music. Ask the students to pair and discuss what the author's purpose might be for including such harsh statements.
• Have the students discuss what the author's purpose might be in discussing how significantly different Gloria and the narrator are.
Homework
Have the students write a paragraph describing the author's purpose for using country music as the basis for representing southern culture.
Challenge
Have the students write a paragraph describing the process a reader must engage in to determine the author's purpose for writing a novel/passage.
