Objective
Students will meticulously analyze the many different elements of the novel's cover art in order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen to underscore these themes.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of Cece Bell's graphic novel memoir El Deafo provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the novel features on its cover the title written in cursive and composed of the cords from Cece's hearing aids that for many years cause her consternation and a feeling of isolation.
