Lesson 1 (from Part One: Prologue - Chapter 4)
Objective
In this lesson, the students will research the author’s history and background.
Dr. Tara Westover has studied at, and holds degrees from, some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. The students will research the author and determine how her life story, full of traumatic trials and tribulations, eventually resulted in her book, Educated: A Memoir.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What is the difference between a novel and a memoir? What religion was the author raised in? How would this book have been different if it was not based on a true story? How was Tara’s memoir received by her family?
Journal Activity: Write a journal entry deciding whether a novel or a memoir would be easier to write. Which is more personal? Is there greater creative license when writing a novel? How could a true story affect a reader more profoundly?
