Lesson 1 (from Part I (Ark of Bones - A Boll of Roses))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Dumas's use of Biblical allusions in "The Ark of Bones." In this story, Fish-Hound and Headeye come upon a large, ghostly ship - an "ark" - whose likely supernatural occupants bring up bones from the river, re-animating them and bringing them back to life. Before the ship appears, there is a storm. Dumas draws on the imagery and events from the Noah's Ark story in the Bible to create a poignant story about reclaiming some dignity for Blacks that spent their lives battling oppression and fear.
