Lesson 1 (from "Storytelling" – "All or Nothing or Something Else")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Eating Animals. Students will research author Jonathan Safran Foer, read the first two sections of “Storytelling,” which include “The Fruits of Family Trees” and Possible Again,” and will discuss the narrative style and tone established in the beginning of the book. Eating Animals is an exploration into the ethics, legislation, and operations within the agricultural livestock farming industry. Foer opens the text with his personal narrative, describing the meaning of food in his family and his considerations about omnivorous versus vegetarian diets.
Lesson
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the first two subchapters in “Storytelling”: “The Fruits of Family Trees” and Possible Again.” After the reading, students should collaborate in developing an outline on the topics of the book and what they expect to learn in its study.
