• In Chapter 1, Janina Duszejko is an elderly woman who lives alone in a cabin in the woods in a remote settlement in Poland on the Czech border.
• There are seven other cabins in the woods, but the cabins are a distance from one another.
• One night after taking hops and valerian pills before bed, she is awakened by a neighbor of hers that she calls Oddball.
• He tells her that one of her other neighbors, whom she calls Big Foot, is dead.
• Even though Janina disliked Big Foot, she is shocked and horrified.
• She loves animals, and she disliked Big Foot because he was an avid hunter.
• When they go to his cabin, they find the man...
