Objective

Objective: Lessa sleeps on a bed of straw in a cheese room, as though she were extremely impoverished. Many people in other countries don't have a bed to sleep in and live well below our poverty standards. The objective of this lesson is to examine the different levels of poverty to gain an understanding and appreciation for what it is we have.

1) Ask students to define what poverty means to them. First have them write it out, then have them draw it. Present in front of the class.

2) Break the students into groups of two or three and have them research what is considered the poverty line in North America. Have them compare the dollar amounts in three countries of their choice, and exchange those currencies into their home countries dollar value. What does this show about North America?
