Objective

The story opens with Piemur waking up in the morning. He is late to feed the fire lizards with Menolly and Camo, the kitchen drudge. Piemur thinks of how he would like to have a fire lizard of his own. He notes that this particular morning seems different. Menolly looks unusually awake, and she seems somewhat distant and preoccupied. She says little to him before he leaves for chorus class. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the relationship between Piemur and Menolly.

1) Class Discussion: Discuss with the class what type of relationship Piemur and Menolly share. Are they more like friends or lovers? Why? What is special about their relationship? How do they know each other, and what hardships have they endured in the past? Why does Piemur wake up every morning to feed Menolly's fire lizards with her? Explain.
