Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-2)
Objective
As "Double Whammy" opens, Hiaasen uses several different puzzles simultaneously to pique the reader's interest and draw the reader further into the story. For example, Bobby Clinch gets ready to go fishing, but doesn't take his tackle box and thinks about bringing a gun. In addition, the same man who hosts a fishing show and is supposedly an expert on fishing is being accused of cheating in fishing tournaments. The author is cleverly using simultaneous puzzles to pique reader interest and draw the reader into the story. The objective of this Lesson Plan is to examine the author's story-telling technique and how this technique affects the reader.
