Jeff Kinney’s writing includes similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and personification. The clear sensory details help the reader experiences the feelings, joys, and fears that make up Greg’s world.

Class Discussion: What are the differences between literal and metaphorical language in literature? Which one falls under figurative language? Why is creative language effective in this story? What other types of figurative language are there?
Journal Activity: Locate five similes or metaphors and write them down. Circle the similes and underline the metaphors. Draw a picture in your journal of how you interpret one of the creative phrases.
