Carnival Time!
Set the mood for the novel by asking everyone to assist in decorating the classroom like a Caribbean island. The students can also have a carnival. This is very much like Mardi Gras. The students can make small floats and dress up. If permitted they can have a parade.
Music of the Island
Divide the class into groups and have each group make instruments to play island music (i.e. pots and pans for steel drums). Get Jimmy Buffett's recording of "Don't Stop the Carnival" and play along.
Amerigo the Game
Create a game about the novel. The island can be drawn on a large piece of paper or cardboard. Interconnect locations of the island with spaces. Create players, either members of the story, or different colored Normans. Create small cards that can be drawn when a player lands on certain locations. There can be good...
