Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine decisions characters make in Part 1, and what the author conveys to readers about decision-making. Mama Cancion wants her daughters to make good decisions. Teresa makes her own decision to follow her heart and becomes pregnant with her lover. Ana allows her mother to make a decision for her that leads to her marriage at age 15.

Class Discussion: When does Ana receive a formal proposal of marriage from Juan? How does she feel about the proposal? What are the reasons why her mother wants her to accept the proposal? Are there reasons why the proposal is in Ana's best interest? Does Ana make a conscious decision to accept the proposal? Who makes the decision for her? Could she have refused? Why does she go along with the decision her mother makes for her? What does the author convey...
