Possible Activities:
• Throughout chapters one and two, Gertie's lack of education and low income are referred to and discussed. Have the students work in small groups of 3-4 and extend this topic into real life situations they have experienced. Have the students make connections between the text and their own personal lives. The information can be gathered and handed in or shared orally.
• Throughout chapters one and two, clear class distinctions are referred to by the author. Have the students discuss how class distinctions may or may not exist in our current society. Have the students work in small groups of 3-4 students to describe how this occurs. Be sure the students describe both similarities and differences to that which is described in the chapters.
