• The protagonist of the novel, Amal, reports that the previous day at half past four in the afternoon, while working out on the treadmill in her house and watching an episode of Friends, she had made the decision to wear the hijab “full-time” (2).
• Amal explains that she and her Muslim friends refer to women like herself as “part-timers,” (3) which means, she says, wearing “the hijab as part of our uniform at an Islamic school or when we go to the mosque or maybe even when we’re having a bad hair day” (2).
• “Full-timers,” on the other hand, wear the hijab “all the time” whenever they are in the company of “males who aren’t immediate family” (2).
