At the beginning of Chapter 1, Ready?, the reader finds Eddie experiencing the horrors of becoming a teenager. Eddie wake to pimples, dandruff, a changing voice, and body odor as he finishes the 8th grade and approaches high school. This lesson will discuss what insight the start of Do Black Patent-leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? gives the reader about Eddie as an individual.

Divide the class into groups and discuss how the introduction of Eddie in Chapter 1, Ready? sets up typical conflict and turmoil for teenagers.
