Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Anappara's exploration of poverty, and of children's experiences of poverty in India, throughout Part I. Jai and his friends are constantly beset by the struggles and challenges of being poor. Jai's parents both work long hours and his sister, Runu-Didi, a young girl herself, often takes on caregiving tasks for him in their absence. One of Jai's friends, Faiz, works small jobs to help pay for food for his family. Jai is embarrassed about always wearing clothes that are too small for him. Jai and all his friends also depend heavily on the free lunch they get every day from the school. Money and food are always a worry.
