• Divergent is a young adult novel set in a future, post-apocalyptic Chicago.

• The first five chapters of the novel introduce protagonist Beatrice Prior, a girl who has just turned sixteen years old and is facing her “aptitude test,” a test that will determine which of the five factions Beatrice is most adept at.

• The five factions of the Divergent Universe are as follows: Abnegation, dedicated to selflessness; Dauntless, dedicated to courage; Erudite, dedicated to intelligence; Amity, dedicated to peace; and Candor, dedicated to honesty.

• Following their aptitude tests, the teens of this futuristic Chicago will choose one of the five factions to which they will be inducted; Beatrice may choose to stay with her family in the Abnegation faction, or to choose another faction if she is more suited to it.

• Beatrice and her brother Caleb both take their aptitude tests on the same day.
